Services provided by WIN
Plant Identification
WIN is a centre for plant identification. Environmental consultants, researchers, students, and members of the public can verify a plant’s name using herbarium specimens or can consult with one of the curators regarding its identification. We offer a range of identification services for consultants and government researchers. Click the link below for more information.

Education
We provide learning opportunities for the public including botanical illustration and identification workshops and advice with collecting and making plant specimens.
Distributional Information
Detailed information about a plant’s distribution is captured on the label of every specimen. Researchers can access these data by examining our collection information on GBIF or Canadensys, or arranging for an in-person visit to the herbarium.

Specimen loans and exchanges
WIN supports an active exchange and loan program. Please contact the Curator for more information on this service.
Bryophyte and lichen collection
The University of Manitoba Cryptogamic Herbarium (WIN) contains approximately 15,000 specimens of lichens and bryophytes. There are over 5,500 lichen records available on Canadensys and GBIF. There are 1,518 bryophyte records available on The Consortium of Bryophyte Herbaria. Please contact the Curator for more information on the WIN Cryptogamic Herbarium.
Molecular Phylogenetics
Herbarium specimens can yield high quality DNA, providing a rich source of material for molecular phylogenetic studies. We invite researchers to contact the Curator for more information on this resource.
